{"id":1013,"date":"2019-07-23T20:18:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T20:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=1013"},"modified":"2019-07-24T18:10:40","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T18:10:40","slug":"understanding-complex-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=1013","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Complex Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Who doesn&#8217;t love a good story?\u00a0 The best offer more than just entertainment.\u00a0 They serve as conduits for life lessons, morals, healing, and a greater understanding of what it means to be human.\u00a0 But many miss these opportunities because they get lost in the complexity of the form in which it is told.\u00a0 Ballet is one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Appreciation often comes with teaching and exposure.\u00a0 Sometimes it takes hundreds of hours. This has been the case for me.\u00a0 I had been taught that dance was dirty and unworthy.\u00a0 Little did I understand until my daughter started to take ballet classes at The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamadancetheatre.com\/\">Alabama Dance Theater<\/a>\u00a0otherwise known as ADT.\u00a0 I wrote\u00a0 about\u00a0 our experiences with their ballet productions of\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?m=201810\">Dracula<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?m=201903\">Beauty and the Beast<\/a>\u00a0in early blogs.\u00a0 Today I am focused on the ballet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveabout.com\/la-bayadere-ballet-review-1007228\">La Bayadere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ADT&#8217;s Summer Intensive finale will include some scenes from LaBayadere at their performance of Stars on the Riverfront in Montgomery, Alabama early next week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stars-RR-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1015\" src=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stars-RR-photo-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stars RR photo\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stars-RR-photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stars-RR-photo.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My daughter was selected to participate in this shortened version of La Bayadare in a supportive role.\u00a0 So she has been coming back from rehearsals with bits and pieces of her understanding of the story line.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so grateful as without the time to research this ballet,\u00a0 I would most likely misunderstand the story and opportunities to talk with my daughter regarding valuable lessons from the story.<\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s revisit how personal experience affects one&#8217;s understanding.\u00a0 I wrote about this in another blog\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?m=201609\">How the context of TV affects children&#8217;s understanding.<\/a>\u00a0 TV, Movies, and books as well as personal experiences are the very context in which many interpret new learning.\u00a0 This is definitely what my daughter did with La Bayadare, which means &#8220;Temple dancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She had first learned about temple dancers through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/church\/church-history\/church-history-for-kids\/amy-carmichael-helped-the-helpless-11634859.html\">The missionary, Amy Carmichael<\/a>.\u00a0 Amy spent much of her work rescuing children who&#8217;s poor desperate parents sold them to the Temple to live and work.\u00a0 My daughter loves to dance, but not as a child slave in a Temple in India.\u00a0 For my dancer this story surmounts incredible sympathy for the young girls that she learned about trapped in this lifestyle.\u00a0 It also awakens her awareness that not all religions bow down to the same deity, much less the one that she chooses to.\u00a0 She does not want to bow down to other gods and I applaud her for this.<\/p>\n<p>What I had to point out to her is that participating in this ballet does not mean that ADT or any of the dancers are promoting the culture and religion featured in this ballet.\u00a0 What they are doing is offering exposure to it.\u00a0 And they are also delving into the depths of ballet history as this particular one connects the time periods of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-ballet.com\/bayadere.php\">the Classical and Romantic Eras<\/a>\u00a0of ballet.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamadancetheatre.com\/staff.html\">Sara Sanford and the staff at ADT<\/a>\u00a0are bringing to Montgomery this history with local choreography and dancers in addition\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamadancetheatre.com\/summer-intensive-2019.html\">guest faculty<\/a>: Shawn Black, Jonathan Chapman, Meghan Chapman, and Wendy White Sasser.<\/p>\n<p>So go back and rightclick on\u00a0 the colored words pertaining to La Bayadere to learn more about this particular story and then come on out with a lawn chair or blanket to the Montgomery, Alabama River front on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 7:30 PM or Monday, July 29, 2019 to enjoy the show.\u00a0 It&#8217;s free and the gates open at 6:00 pm.\u00a0 Vendors will be on site selling refreshments.<\/p>\n<p>by Hope Mucklow\u00a0 #MontgomeryAlabama #ADT #Ballet #LaBayadere<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vmwKO0shZg\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?page_id=8\">Hope Mucklow, Author, Song Writer, Teacher, Tutor, &#038;
