{"id":442,"date":"2016-11-23T12:17:02","date_gmt":"2016-11-23T12:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=442"},"modified":"2016-11-23T14:54:04","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T14:54:04","slug":"verruckt-insane-is-that-what-we-are","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=442","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Verruckt&#8221; &#8220;Insane&#8221; is that what we are?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">&#8220;Verruckt&#8217; means &#8220;insane&#8221; in German and therefore was used in the naming of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/kansas-waterslide-boy-died-demolished-001707823.html\">&#8220;world&#8217;s tallest waterslide<\/a>.&#8221; However, \u00a0instead of being acclaimed in the Guinness Book of World Record&#8217;s it is shamed with\u00a0a recent tragic story involving the death of a 10 year old boy.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3evqe-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">This is what we have gotten in our stubborn insistence of deriving self-worth from what we&#8217;ve done or accomplished. Professional sports have driven their athletes to ridiculous abusive diets and exercise schedules. NFL players leave brain damaged from concussions. And what about the famous musicians and actors? Do their managers treat them any better? <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"9q99a-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"9q99a-0-0\">\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Parents, please, stop pushing your children in their sports and arts. I understand some of you have dreams of scholarships and beyond. Scholarships are helpful but they also make it hard to study if they&#8217;re sports related. They end up on the 5+ year plan. I know because I learned right along with the stars of the 1989 WVU football team in freshman English. I graduated in 1990 and they graduated in 1991 if at all. \u00a0If I remember correctly <a href=\"http:\/\/search.myway.com\/search\/video.jhtml?n=7829e7b1&amp;p2=%5EBYC%5Exdm006%5ETTAB02%5Eus&amp;pg=video&amp;pn=1&amp;ptb=D3CD9E8D-103D-422E-B089-63F57551907F&amp;qs=&amp;searchfor=WVU+Major+Harris+1989+Highlight+Video+YouTube&amp;si=&amp;ss=sub&amp;st=tab&amp;tpr=sbt&amp;trs=hps&amp;vidOrd=1&amp;vidId=YJZFzdjjN5o\">Major Harris<\/a>\u00a0left early to turn pro. \u00a0Do any of you even know who he is?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ecj59-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I dated a recipient of a full ride track scholarship for 3\/4 years of my undergraduate time. \u00a0The friends I made through him on the women&#8217;s track team all struggled with eating disorders. \u00a0One of my friends on the women&#8217;s tennis team reported the same of her team mates. In addition to struggling with her own eating disorder she struggled with her coursework \u00a0because of the pressure, practice and travel schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"e1t01-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"e1t01-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e1t01-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"9ld1\" data-offset-key=\"203gi-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"203gi-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"203gi-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">We would all do our children a better service if we did what Ben Carson&#8217;s mom did. When Ben&#8217;s grades were the worst in his 5th grade class she decided to take him and his brother to the library each week to get a book to read. \u00a0She didn&#8217;t listen to the complaints. \u00a0She insisted. Do you think Ben and his brother wanted to read if they were struggling at school? I&#8217;m sure they would have preferred their electronics too.
