{"id":950,"date":"2019-04-24T13:24:19","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T13:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=950"},"modified":"2019-04-24T13:36:51","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T13:36:51","slug":"anger-indifference-pity-and-grief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hopetheparentteacher.com\/?p=950","title":{"rendered":"Anger, Indifference, and Grief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anger, indifference, and grief&#8230; great title huh?\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the warm and fuzzy blog of the day.\u00a0 However, you might be surprised if you find the courage to read on that it could free you to feel better.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Grief, Anger and Recriminations in Sri Lanka as ISIS Claims It Staged Bomb Attacks\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/svc\/oembed\/html\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2019%2F04%2F23%2Fworld%2Fasia%2Fsri-lanka-bombing.html#?secret=DrY0nYqQC2\" data-secret=\"DrY0nYqQC2\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/strong> chose\u00a0<em>Grief, Anger, and Recrimination<\/em> as their title to describe the recent news and horrors of calculated suicide bombings in churches and hotels in Sri Lanka this past Easter Sunday.\u00a0 This event definitely contributed to my inspiration to write this blog, but my take will be a bit more personal for those of us not directly affected by it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Is-anger-good-or-bad\">Anger<\/a>\u00a0is neutral, natural, and often a healthy response to injustice, evil, and loss.\u00a0 The problem lies in the power of this emotion and human propensity to respond inappropriately.\u00a0 Recrimination is one example of this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/ephesians\/4-26.htm\">Ephesians 4:26<\/a>\u00a0commands readers to not sin while feeling angry.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t forbid anger.\u00a0 It forbids sinning.\u00a0 But it also continues on in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/ephesians\/4-27.htm\">Ephesians 4:27<\/a>\u00a0with motivating the importance of why.\u00a0 \u00a0How we respond to the wrongs committed against ourselves, loved ones, and others determines whether healthy healing will take place or the vicious vortex of evil hastens on.<\/p>\n<p>Justice is an universal given.\u00a0 \u00a0Why else to children cry out all the time, &#8220;He\/She took&#8230;xyz&#8230;!!!&#8221; and &#8220;It&#8217;s not fair!&#8221;?\u00a0 The desire for it is innate.\u00a0 The question is how were you taught to deal with injustice and evil when confronted with it?\u00a0 Of course it is a given responsibility of any government.\u00a0 This is why ruling bodies exist.\u00a0 But I believe there are three generic philosophies that affect each of us very deeply in our psyche.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take matters into your own hands<\/li>\n<li>Be indifferent<\/li>\n<li>Mourn and entrust to a higher religious power<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The irony is many who profess to be devout believers really take matters into their own hands.\u00a0 They evoke the name of God as theirs to do as they see fit.\u00a0 They may call on you to pray with them, but they&#8217;re really just thinking that if more people pray for the outcome they will get want they want.\u00a0 The next problem, indifference is not much better of a response.<\/p>\n<p>Indifference just like anger is neutral.\u00a0 Some writers have pointed out to how it can be used for the wrong.\u00a0 The late\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Elie_Wiesel\">Elie Wiesel<\/a>, said, &#8220;T<b>he opposite of love is not hate, it&#8217;s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it&#8217;s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it&#8217;s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it&#8217;s indifference. Because of indifference, one dies before one actually dies. &#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>But therapist, Dr. LaBier titled one of his articles teachers how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-new-resilience\/201004\/declining-relationship-recharge-it-through-indifference\">recharge a declining relationship through indifference<\/a>.\u00a0 And he isn&#8217;t just giving more manipulative means to get what you want.\u00a0 He really discusses how it can bring better health to you and your struggling relationship.\u00a0 So when one responds indifferently, is it always bad?<\/p>\n<p>In some ways with the constant barrage of horrific worldwide news available 24\/7 individuals need to distance themselves from the pain or do we?\u00a0 Is it possible to allow each of these horrors to touch our souls? I am proposing in order to be more loving and humane, that we do by embracing the 3rd approach, mourning and entrusting justice to be served by the God of the Judeo\/Christian Bible who says,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+32%3A35%2CRomans+12%3A17-19&amp;version=NKJV\">vengeance is the Lord&#8217;s<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, vengeance, not the wimpy forgiving God that has been poorly portrayed through a cheap gospel message.<\/p>\n<p>I resent the misrepresentation of the whole message of the Bible by this quick fix &#8220;it&#8217;s ok&#8221; and excusing abominable behaviors by a magical wave of forgiveness to the unrepentant.\u00a0 Helping me to arrive at a genuine sense of understanding, forgiveness, and compassion towards those who hurt me has never come through this poor understanding of what Jesus did on the cross.\u00a0 I defer and encourage you to read Jeff Crippen&#8217;s article<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unholycharade.com\/2019\/04\/12\/abuse-and-anger-is-it-a-sin-to-be-angry-toward-our-abuser\/\">https:\/\/unholycharade.com\/2019\/04\/12\/abuse-and-anger-is-it-a-sin-to-be-angry-toward-our-abuser\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>for further enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>I have experience that taking matters into my own hands and stuffing my emotion through indifference have given the devil of resentment a hold on my heart that almost destroyed me.<\/p>\n<p>What I have needed during my distress is validation that something terribly unjust just happened.\u00a0 Acknowledging that I should be feeling pain from xyz is what equips me to let go of it.\u00a0 I have to take hold of it first in order to free it.\u00a0 To deny is just to bump into and trip over the elephant blocking my ability to move on in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>First, I need to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/verse\/en\/Psalm%206%3A6\">soak my bed with tears<\/a>\u00a0and drain the grief like the psalmists does in Psalm 6.\u00a0 \u00a0Anytime the Bible says something, its valid.\u00a0 There are fourteen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/resources\/asbury-bible-commentary\/Imprecatory-Psalms\">imprecatory<\/a>\u00a0psalms.\u00a0 \u00a0 The book of Psalms is one of the four books Jesus quoted in his teachings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.biblia.com\/2014\/04\/which-old-testament-book-did-jesus-quote-most\/\">http:\/\/blog.biblia.com\/2014\/04\/which-old-testament-book-did-jesus-quote-most\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/why-we-grieve-the-importance-of-mourning-loss_b_58de79c6e4b0d804fbbb7226\">Huff post<\/a>\u00a0discusses why mourning has value.\u00a0 Why then is it that we keep telling boys and now girls too to man up and not cry?\u00a0 Why is it that we don&#8217;t stop to listen to our friends lament a bad day?\u00a0 Is it because we are afraid ourselves that we cannot handle the pain?<\/p>\n<p>Pain also is\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Is-pain-good-or-bad-Is-it-better-to-feel-pain-or-nothing-at-all\">neutral<\/a>.\u00a0 Its what we do with it that matters.\u00a0 Please let&#8217;s stop running from it and drugging it.\u00a0 Work through it and learn from it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good to cry.\u00a0 \u00a0Then after the tears have flowed, consider responding like the psalmist does in hope and trust that the LORD will deliver justice perfectly in his perfect time.\u00a0 Lastly, be a better friend.\u00a0 Listen, validate, and encourage them in similar format to the content of the Imprecatory Psalms.\u00a0 Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>#Depression #Anger #Indifference #Grief # Recovery #Mourning<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anger, indifference, and grief&#8230; great title huh?\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the warm and fuzzy blog of the day.\u00a0 However, you might be surprised if you find the courage to read on that it could free you to feel better.
